Tongue-tie is when the piece of skin called the frenulum, stops the baby from being able to lift their tongue freely. This can affect the way they latch onto the breast when feeding.
Micah was born with this. I was fortunate as my niece had this and my brother warned me to check for it as it made feeding very hard.
The NHS doesn’t suggest all babies with this should get it divided but if it is affecting breastfeeding then they should be assessed.

For me, i decided to go privately. I referred to the list of private practitioners. I received a 2 hour consultation supporting me with breastfeeding techniques.

This i would say, laid the foundation for me to be able to keep breastfeeding for as long as i did.
I ended up having to get the tongue-tie divided via the nhs when Micah was 9 weeks as the private practitioner at the time didn’t have the qualifications to do the procedure herself. This was because the law changed 24 hours before she was due to come. But she did do a referral for me to get it done. The referal has to be from a lactation specialist, not the GP, i was told at the time.
Getting breastfeeding support significantly helped me keep exclusively breastfeeding for 6 months.
If you want to breastfeed, make sure you ask for help. It is not a common sense thing. It is much much harder than it looks. But with the right support and right help..you will be surprised at the difference this can make
There are so many myths about boys feeding more than girls and therefore milk not being enough and formula being a must. FALSE.
As long as baby is gaining the required weight and it is not painful for you, you are probably doing just fine. Be sure to seek advice from the professionals, join breastfeeding forums and ask questions.
Good luck 😊♥️
